D. Blake Smith's work as a producer and stage director has been heralded for its exceptional creativity, resourcefulness, and accessibility. His academic and literary backgrounds facilitate a uniquely authentic approach to period productions, but he has garnered special attention for his advocacy and work in contemporary operas and his passion for bringing opera to younger audiences often leads to creative reimaginings of traditional favorites.

He currently serves as founding artistic director and producer of the resident opera company of the University of Delaware, University of Delaware Opera Theatre.
